Background

Sue Ion began working at BNFL in 1979. She is now BNFL's Executive Director of Technology, a position she has held since 1992. Ion is BNFL's most senior female employee controlling an annual research and development (R&D) budget of about �80 million and some 1000 employees.

She is a long-term advocate of nuclear power. "I got a prize at O-level and chose a book on nuclear power. I've always seen it as a high-tech, forward-looking industry that benefits mankind", she says. [1] (http://www.nuclearspin.org/index.php/Sue_Ion#endnote_council)

An Influential Voice

She is the President of the British Nuclear Energy Society. Ion also represents the UK on a number of international review and oversight committees including the International Atomic Energy Agency, Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Energy and the Euratom Science and Technology Committee.
