Entergy

Background

Entergy is America’s second largest nuclear operator with eleven reactors at nine plants: Arkansas Nuclear One Units 1 and 2; Grand Gulf (Mississippi); Cooper (Nebraska); Indian Point Units 2 & 3 (New York); James A. FitzPatrick (New York); Pilgrim (Massachusetts); River Bend Station (Louisiana); Vermont Yankee (Vermont); Waterford 3, (Louisiana). Entergy Nuclear is a member of the NuStart Consortium which aims to obtain one of the new ‘streamlined’ combined Construction and Operating License (COL) for two selected reactor technologies. It is also a member of the Nuclear Energy Institute [1] (http://www.nuclearspin.org/index.php/Entergy#endnote_ent)

Three Applications for New Reactors

Entergy is involved with three applications to build new reactors. On September 22, 2005, it announced its intention to seek a permit to construct and operate a new nuclear reactor at its River Bend site in Louisiana. It is expected that Entergy will submit its application for a Combined Operating License (COL) to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in early 2008. The regulatory review is expected to take approximately three years, and construction is expected to take about four years. The best-case scenario (from Entergy’s perspective) would see the new reactor operational in 2015. [2] (http://www.nuclearspin.org/index.php/Entergy#endnote_pc1) The other applications are through the NuStart Consortium, one at Entergy’s Grand Gulf site, [3] (http://www.nuclearspin.org/index.php/Entergy#endnote_pc2) where Entergy is seeking an Early Site Permit [4] (http://www.nuclearspin.org/index.php/Entergy#endnote_pc3) to environmentally qualify the site for a new nuclear reactor, and one at the Bellefonte site in Alabama, owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
