Background
Eija-Riitta Korhola is a Conservative Finnish MEP. She is a Member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, and one of the more vocal pro-nuclear MEPs.
Climate not Equipped with "Ideological Filters"
In October 2005, Korhola hosted a "Climate Change Seminar on Nuclear Energy" at the European Parliament along with FORATOM. The FORATOM brochure highlighted the latest PR push for the industry. One banner headline said: "Let's Clear the air!" as well as "Nuclear power plants are environmentally friendly, as they generate electricity without emitting any greenhouse or acid rain gases". Korhola said that the climate is not equipped with "ideological filters" it can't tell the difference between fossil emissions due to so-called "nice reasons", i.e. shutting down nuclear power and those deriving from pure ignorance".
"A smart politician needs to update his/her views on nuclear power and respond to reality. In other words, nuclear energy is an important tool in reaching the goal", Korhola said.
An MEP Declaration on Climate Change and Nuclear Energy was signed at the seminar by 25 MEPs.[2] (http://www.nuclearspin.org/index.php/Eija-Riitta_Korhola#endnote_epp)
"Political Dogma" Only Reason to Reject Nukes
In a speech in October 2006 to the European People's Party, Korhola said that the rejection of nuclear "that emits almost nothing has to be political dogma but it exists even today as the effects of global climate change are more and more alarming. Still, there are groups that are born to oppose to nuclear power and for them giving up this stance would mean giving up their political identity. We are not shackled like that". Nukes Lobbying at Climate Talks
Eija-Riitta Korhola chaired a nuclear industry event at The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Nairobi, November 2006, co-organised by the European Nuclear Society; Canadian Nuclear Association; Japan Atomic Industrial Forum; Nuclear Energy Institute and World Nuclear Association.
It was called "Zero and Low-CO 2 Energy Technologies in Annex I & II Countries - Part of the Solution". Speaking at the event were Claude Nahon from EDF and Dr. Magnus Mori, World Nuclear Association. [4] (http://www.nuclearspin.org/index.php/Eija-Riitta_Korhola#endnote_climate)
